Question: this is for a research project and i don't really understand the question itself (what is the electrical grid?)

Yes, and no; depending on the size and location of your back yard. If it is very big (say a farm), and there is sufficient regular wind to make it worthwhile, it's possible; ,but unlikely. A windmill generating enough power to make it worthwhile is VERY expensive, and electricity is VERY cheap (a few cents a kilowatt hour). Many yachts run windmills to charge their batteries; but they do not produce much excess power. Large wind generators (usuall about 50 - 70 metres high) cost over $1 million each, and a grid of at least half a dozen would be needed to 'break even'. You might be better off installing a solar generator; but again, the expense in setting up a large enough unit to supply the grid might be prohibitively expensive.

The electrical grid is the system that delivers electricity to your home. In theory, if you are generating electricity for your home, and you generate more than you consume, the meter on your house runs backward as electricity flows into the grid instead of into your home. You're effectively selling power to them because your meter is running backward. It's not very common, most of the time you simply use less electricity from the grid if you're using some form of alternate source of electricity like wind or solar.

I don' know about a wind mill but I had a friend once that made a small generating station on the creek behind his house. He got it to generate enough electricity to run his house and the electric meter started running backwards....I think the power company did pay him for the excess power although it was very minute.......but he didn't have a power bill for a while.....keep in mind that this was some 30 years ago !!! Good Luck....If you get to generating power, send some my way !!!! ;-}

If you live in a city, they probably have an ordinance regulating the size and height of windmills. A windmill won't generate a significant amount of power unless the wind blows hard most of the time. To generate more power than you use, you need a big, expensive windmill and 30 mph winds for about half of the time. Even with that much wind, it might take ten years for your windmill to pay for itself.

Those numbers, as impressive as they seem, are meaningless in themselves. For example, back in the 18th or 19th century, when NY's population was still much less than a million, it was on the verge of a total colapse. The lack of sewers combined with very ignorant people (immigrant, btw) with poor hygene habits made the city an open latrine. Educational policies and the construction of infrastructure has made it possible to have a population of 8 million (??) people with a very reasonable standard of living. The water example you quoted is also very interesting. Most people don't realize that only a very small percentage of the worlds fresh water is used for human consumption and hygene (around 15% if I remember well). Another 20% or so is used in idustries and the rest is used in agriculture. However, the usage of water in agribusiness is greatly ineffective with about 80% being wasted (for example, sprinklers loose a lot of water to evaporation). So, the potential gains of efficiency are huge. The case of air polution is obviously easily reduced by massive use of public transportation and/or new technologies. There are several changes that can completely change the potential population of an area, be it a town, a country or a planet. Few shifts in paradigms can make a huge difference in the size of the population that can live in a given area. Obviously, one of them is education (it seems to really be the key to every problem, don't you agree?).
