I'm Looking For A Book?

I'm Looking For A Book? Topic: How to write a school charter

Question: About Magic. And no, not Harry Potter or Lord of the rings or whatever... Something somewhat dark, kind of like "Skin Hunger" by Catherine Duey or "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. I don't want anything seemingly childish, either. Something well written, with an appealing plot/story-line, intriguing characters, and a more realistic view on magic. Nothing overly romantic, either. I would prefer if the protagonist was a male, but I'm not *too* particular about that. Thank you!

Vampire Academy- Richelle Mead -St. Vladimir's Academy isn't just any boarding school—it's a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They've been on the run, but now they're being dragged back to St. Vladimir's—the very place where they're most in danger. . . . Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy's ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world's fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever. The House of Night Series -P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast -After she is Marked, 16-year-old Zoey Redbird enters the House of Night and learns that she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is mis-using her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny— with a little help from her new vampyre friends. The Abhorsen Trilogy- Garth Nix -Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Charter-Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There, she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life - and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. Wicked- Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguie -Holly Cathers's world shatters when her parents are killed in a terrible accident. Wrenched from her home in San Francisco, she is sent to Seattle to live with her relatives, Aunt Marie-Claire and her twin cousins, Amanda and Nicole. In her new home, Holly's sorrow and grief soon give way to bewilderment at the strange incidents going on around her. Such as how any wish she whispers to her cat seems to come true. Or the way a friend is injured after a freak attack from a vicious falcon. And there's the undeniable, magnetic attraction to a boy Holly barely knows. Holly, Amanda, and Nicole are about to be launced into a dark legacy of witches, secrets, and alliances, where ancient magics yield dangerous results. The girls will assume their roles in an intergenerational feud beyond their wildest imaginations...and in doing so, will attempt to fulfill their shared destiny. The Naming: The First Book of Pellinor- Alison Croggon -Maerad is a slave in a desperate and unforgiving settlement, taken there as a child when her family is destroyed in war. She doesn't yet know she has inherited a powerful gift, one that marks her as a member of the noble School of Pellinor and enables her to see the world as no other can. It is only when she is discovered by Cadvan, one of the great Bards of Lirigon, that her true identity and extraordinary destiny unfold. Now, she and her mysterious teacher must embark on a treacherous, uncertain journey through a time and place where the forces of darkness wield an otherworldly terror.

Huffington IS completely off of the tracks, her only qualification is that she married well. Her books are rants and raves that do not hold up to even the slightest scrutiny. Coulter is an Ivy League educated attorney and her logic is very sound and she verifies her facts. Her views may be tough for people to take but you rarely see anyone question her facts or logic specifically. You usually read things such as "she's ugly" (she is quite attractive) or that she is off the tracks, they are never very specific. Even with that said unless college has changed since I graduated 15+ years ago I would stick with Huffington. You will increase your likelihood of garnering a satisfactory grade by regurgitating Huffington's views because that is the sort of people who are teaching. You can learn the facts and become enlightened after you begin working. You usually get a huge case of conservatism the first time you have to make payroll.

It depends on the genre. If I am exploring a genre I'm not familiar with, I will avoid the tacky covers. But if I'm familiar with the genre, the covers aren't considered tacky. I like science fiction. Many of the covers are ridiculously tacky if you're not familiar with the genre but within the genre, what's considered tacky might be the most attractive. Put a robot filing a woman's nails whose dress is made of fire straps on the surface of a purple moon and I'll read it. Same goes with horror and romance. Cheap, though, is subjective. Maybe it's better to say it's not professionally-designed. Yes, I do avoid those whether I should or not.

Okay, this is an older one, but I found it extremely interesting. In the Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King......1978. The plot is set in medival times with a kingdom and the protagonist is a boy (who grows up) who tries to clear his name of the murder of the king. The perspective changes over and over (as if to make your head spin) so even though the plot revolves around this boy, others have their moment of glory rather than just being mentioned. The descriptions get pretty graphic and there is barely a romantic interest involved. Not a good magic vs. bad magic either. There's just some magic involved, but for the most part it's pretty close to being realistic. This book is more realistic, but it has that Stephen King charm. With Stephen King in charge of the typewriter, you know this book isn't goin' to be kiddish or even way way out there (he bases his stories on exaggerated real events). Another good one: Glory Lane (forgot author) About a street punk who gets mixed up with aliens at a bowling alley. Seriously, this is one of the funniest/ weirdest books that I have read. It's different from other sci-fi stuff (a whole lot better). hope this helped. nya nya

Write the book first. So many people say, "I'm going to write a book," but then they never do. Finish it first, then worry about publishing. As for the writing, I'd probably start with an outline first, so you can structure something that builds a whole picture. When it's done, you'll want to start researching publishers and agents that work in your genre -- Writer's Market is your best bet for that. But don't even look at WM until you've written "The End."
