What are some American novels with themes that relate to 'Look Homeward, Angel' by Thomas Wolfe? Topic: Relating to others essay writing

Question: I need to read a minimum of four American novels for high school literature course and then write a large essay about all of them. I'm very interested in reading 'Look Homeward, Angel', and I need three other American novels that relate in some way to this book. I've considered 'The Sound and the Fury' by Faulkner, though this isn't as good of a match as I'd like... I just need ideas! Any AMERICAN novels that relate to 'Look Homeward, Angel' and would make good fodder for an essay...

I suppose Faulkner wouldn't be too bad an idea, really. This is a tough question, even as Look Homeward, Angel is a favorite of mine. Here are a few things you might want to check into. They each apply in one way or another but I'm not exactly sure what you want to focus on as far as similarities go. They Came Like Swallows ~ William Maxwell A Death In the Family ~ James Agee Clock Without Hands or The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter ~ Carson McCullers Other Voices, Other Rooms ~ Truman Capote Main Street (possibly) ~ Sinclair Lewis An American Tragedy (possibly) ~ Theodore Dreiser For style, rather than themes, you may want to look into the work of John Dos Passos. I'll edit if more titles occur to me. I hope you enjoy Wolfe as much as I have. It's nice to see him being read.

you should write approximately: - Teddy Roosevelt's contradictions as president. He exchange right into a Republican yet maximum of his regulations and different measures have been liberal. - Prohibition and how the Mafia controlled united statesa. - The Nineteen Fifties, how conformity and consumerism have been a base to the social ameliorations of the 60s and the 70s. - Why Reagan's presidency exchange into made up of "teflon". Why he's seen an incredible president while he exchange into no longer. - NAFTA and its outcomes on the partaking international locations.

If I remember right, Look Homeward Angel was a big influence on Jack Kerouac's The Town and the City. I seem to remember him referencing it in the book. A longish book, but it is worth reading. I think you could also use Ken Kesey's lesser known work Sometimes a Great Notion, which was a Paul Newman movie. The movie was so so, the book was great. Not too long, A medium sized paperback. While it isn't a bildungsroman, it is concerned with returning to one's roots. John Steinbeck's East of Eden, a long novel, but a great one. If you're lucky, you've already read it. Multi-generational, a bit more sprawling than Look Homeward Angel. Russell Banks' Rule of the Bone. A bildungsroman, this book is modeled on Huck Finn. I include it because its an easy book to read, funny, and your teacher will recognize the author, but not necessarily have read the book. It never hurts in this type of thing to toss in a book your teacher hasn't formed an opinion of yet.

well, Thomas Wolfe's main goal with Look Homeward Angel was to portray "the American experience"...... although he's commonly grouped with the Modernists as far as the era he was writing in, he's actually better compared to the Romantics for that book's style and content you could focus on youth growing up in America as your main shared theme....... that would open up lots of possibilities, like Huck Finn, Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, My Antonia, Sometimes a Great Notion... even Sound adn the Fury, since Quentin, Benjy, Caddy and Jason all grow up during the course of the novel (just y'know, not in a linear timed sort of way)... there are lots to choose from here's a good list of some American books w/summaries, so you can peruse through 'em. and they're all classics... http://www.shmoop.com/literature/ i hope that helps. Look Homeward Angel is awesome. good luck!
