How to talk about an eating disorder? (Re-post)? Topic: How to write a letter telling someone about yourself

Question: I want to tell someone but I can't, since I don't really feel like I have an eating disorder. I feel like I don't have one because of how big I am, and the only way I could tell someone is only if I were dangerously skinny. I'm 5'8 and I weigh 104 pounds. I'm thirteen, and for the past four weeks I've been making myself throw up almost every day and counting calories. It's only been four weeks, some people have gone through this for over ten years. I hate it. But I feel like I can't tell anybody since I'm not even that sick. I'm tired of counting calories. I'm tired of feeling sick very time I eat. I just want to eat without thinking about it. I'm tired of wanting to work out every time I eat. I want to look at myself and think "Wow, I'm really pretty." But how is anyone going to take me seriously when I'm not even unhealthy, when I'm fat. I'm not even sick. Most people go through this for years. I feel like a little weak wimp, but at the same time I feel like it's wimpy not to tell anyone. This is the one thing I feel I have control of and I don't want to let it go. I just feel like it's really not a big deal, and it's only a big deal if I'm hospitalized. I'm not even skinny, and people always say I am but I'm not and I always feel like they're lying to me to make me feel better. I don't know what to do. I just got out of my self harm addiction and now there's this. I'm always doing things to hurt myself and people I love. I've only had anorexia once, for like a week when I was twelve, and I've thought I was fat since I was eleven. I just don't know what to do. Will anyone take me seriously even though it's only been four weeks? Thanks everyone :)

Hun, I know what it's like. It's a constant struggle for me too. I'm 15, and I had anorexia last year. My parents are verbally abusive, constantly telling me I need to "slim down," and "I can't eat that or this," so they were happy when I lost all the weight. They didn't catch on to the fact that I was anorexic, and still don't believe I had it to this day. I was able to heal by going to camp for 3 weeks. It wasn't even an anorexic camp or anything. I didn't even tell anyone I was anorexic, but just being surrounded by people who loved and cared for me constantly, and being away from my parents did the trick for me. When I came back from camp a couple pounds heavier, my parents were disappointed. Mad. My advice to you is just to talk to someone. Anyone. If you can't talk to parents, tell someone. A guidance counselor, a best friend, a church pastor. After I had gained some of my weight back, I told my youth worker at church about my anorexia and stuff. Now she knows to monitor me kind of, and if she sees that I've lost a lot of weight in a short time, she knows how to help me. Even if you don't feel comfortable talking, maybe write your parents a letter, or someone else a letter. People WILL take you seriously, because this is a serious situation.

And veiw yourself as fat but no so.You try to keep a very low body weight,eat very little,most likely to the point of starvation,and you exercise way to much for your body weight.Are you a perfectionists? Blood disorders with a lack of nutrition this deplets your body of vitamin B-12 causing anemia. Digestive issues,can cause constipation & bloating, vomiting & purging may cause irritation of the walls of your esophagus & back side. Teeth & gum disease gastric acid in your mouth from vomiting can damage your teeth and gums Treatment is needed for you to get better and over come this disorder. This may include nutrition education,psychotherapy and medications if becomes severe a hospital say will be in order. You need to get on a healthy diet to remain fit and healthy. Counseling with a mental health professional may help you identify emotional problems or stressful life events that contribute to the eating disorder. Depending on how severe your disorder is and the type of phychotherapy you recive ,your treatment may last for a few sessions or it may continue for several months.With this type treatment it can help youand provide many benefits help you understand yourself better,equip you with problem solving skills,provide you with more effective ways of dealing life's events and help you handle your emotions. However------ therapy can only be successful if you and the therapist are dedicated to achieving a great outcome. It's important to be honest, face up to some possibly painful truths,deal with uncomfortable feelings and be open to new ideas. From what you've said, yes, you do seem to have an eating disorder. Technically, according to the DSM-5, you can't have anorexia nervosa unless you're at a significantly low weight (according to DSM-IV this is around BMI 17.5 or below). Assuming you're female, your BMI is 22, which is technically within the healthy weight range (though really it doesn't mean you're healthy if you're doing something like starving yourself). Therefore, you wouldn't be able to be diagnosed with anorexia nervosa at this point. If it did continue to the point where you were at a significantly low weight, however, you would probably be diagnosed with the binge eating/purging subtype of anorexia nervosa (as opposed to the restrictive subtype of anorexia nervosa, which is more common). The diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa, on the other hand, allows a person to be at a normal weight (or even overweight). Symptoms of bulimia nervosa, according to the DSM-5, include binge eating (consuming a large amount of food in a short period of time) and purging (getting rid of that food via self-induced vomiting, laxatives, etc.). However, since you said you try to eat as little as possible (meaning you don't binge), you wouldn't be viable for this diagnosis either. The last and most common form of eating disorder I'll tell you about is EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified). There are three subtypes of EDNOS: EDNOS with sub-threshold symptoms of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, EDNOS with mixed features of both disorders, or EDNOS with extremely atypical eating behaviours. Out of these three subtypes, you seem to match EDNOS with sub-threshold symptoms of anorexia nervosa the most. Or, if you purge at least once a week, maybe EDNOS with mixed features of both disorders. By the way, if you live in Britain or Australia, you may be diagnosed with atypical anorexia nervosa instead (which isn't in the DSM-5, but is in the ICD-10). Eating disorders really are a serious thing, so you should see a doctor or psychologist immediately before the disorder progresses even further. Eating disorders have one of the highest suicide rates of any mental illness, and they can also come with terrible physical consequences.

It sounds like you really dont want to have this problem so thats the first step to not having it. Thats a good thing. Most people with an eating disorder have much deeper problems. Consequently its really not about food at all. It is good to find a trusted friend, relative or associate to talk it out with. I have sent you some article links on the subject. Maybe you could ask someone to read them with you. This will break the ice and help you to get to the bottom of the problem. I hope that this helps.

Tell your mum, no matter what weight you are anyone can have it. you dont want it to get out of control, do healthy things if you really want a good body, excercise and eat good foods. its better then being depressed, suicidal and soon not eating at all or vomiting everytime you eat.

Eating disorders are a big problem in our country, lives and even our world. (insert here statistic about how many people out of how many have an easting disorder blah blah blah) Eating disorders are often caused by stress and are tied into depression and anger. Very often eating disorders stem form problems with self image caused by the media. That wasn't a very good one because im not writing it for you but this should be a good base. Good Luck!
