state constitutions From wikipedia: Following the Battle of Bunker Hill in June 1775, the Patriots had control of most of Massachusetts; the Loyalists suddenly found themselves on the defensive. In all thirteen colonies, Patriots had overthrown their existing governments, closing courts and driving British governors, agents and supporters from their homes. They had elected conventions and "legislatures" that existed outside of any legal framework; new constitutions were used in each state to supersede royal charters. They declared they were states now, not colonies.[71] On January 5, 1776, New Hampshire ratified the first state constitution, six months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Then, in May 1776, Congress voted to suppress all forms of crown authority, to be replaced by locally created authority. Virginia, South Carolina, and New Jersey created their constitutions before July 4. Rhode Island and Connecticut simply took their existing royal charters and deleted all references to the crown.[72] SOMETHING ELSE FROM WIKIPEDIA. SO MAYBE THIS IS IT ALSO: They first rejected the authority of the Parliament of Great Britain to govern them from overseas without representation, and then expelled all royal officials. By 1774 each colony had established a Provincial Congress, or an equivalent governmental institution, to form individual self-governing states. The British responded by sending combat troops to re-impose direct rule.

Actually a lot of the redcoats were German troops (Hessian mercenaries) and I haven't seen any evidence that the British troops saw this war as anything but a job. That must be hard for an American to appreciate. The American War of Independance is obviously a huge deal to Americans but to the British it was a small war that wasn't even the biggest war we were engaged in at the time. The main war was with the French.
